Human Resources (HR) function has come a long way where we were a cost center to a benefit center in some organization. HR is still evolving which makes it enjoyable for me as I am always learning something new and gaining a new set of skills.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced and what did you learn from this?
Insufficient labour due to a number of factors such as high level absences at our terminals was a challenging task. I really needed to drive engagement and participation levels to meet our customer needs. As a result, we as a business had to tighten our workforce planning process and put in place a plan to meet business needs and customer’s expectations, with this in place we were able to achieve our targets. This strengthened my change management skills being personal resilience, building networks of trust, coaching others and managing workforce and line manager’s expectations. We now have an engaged workforce who believe in our vision; ‘To be the best terminal in the region.’
What key attributes do you look for when recruiting for your team?
A person who shares the organizational value and is the right fit for our culture. In addition, someone who will bring a set of skills and knowledge/experience that complements the team.
What advice would you give to someone looking to reach your level of success?
Do something that you are passionate about and it is important to enjoy what you do. I don’t mean that every job needs to address all of your passions. Take every job as an opportunity to learn something new and keep an open mind. Build good bridges with every person you meet as you will never know how they will weave into the big picture.
Dedication, hard work and determination are a must!
What do you see as the main challenges within your industry?
Productivity is a key focus for our business at the waterfront. This is one of the factors that our competitors are moving towards to semi-automated operations. There are a number of other factors that impacts productivity, employee engagement being one. I work very closely with business leaders to create a vibrant culture by putting in place KPIS for the labour that aligns with the business strategies and a performance management system that focuses on people strengths.
