A procurement recruiter with deep market intelligence

Procurement has moved well beyond transactional purchasing. Today's Chief Procurement Officers and category leaders are expected to take real cost out, manage supply risk in a volatile market and deliver on sustainability commitments. Generalist agencies often struggle to sell the role to the right people, relying on keyword matching that misses the market's best passive talent.

At Sigma Search, we speak the language of category strategy, supplier relationship management (SRM), total cost of ownership (TCO) and direct and indirect spend. We maintain an active, trusted network of procurement leaders across ANZ, which means we can put you in front of proven performers who aren't scrolling job boards. For a view of what senior public sector procurement roles are paying, see our Public Sector Chief Procurement Salaries 2026 report.

How our procurement executive search works

Here’s the reality. The Procurement leaders who really move the needle are rarely looking. They’re halfway through a category reset or renegotiating a major freight contract. They sit firmly in the hidden job market.

So how do you reach them? Not with an advert. In 20+ years of executive search, the approach that works is research and a direct, confidential conversation with someone who understands their world. That’s the kind of executive search Procurement leaders actually respond to.

Start with the commercial outcome

My first question on every procurement recruitment brief is always the same. What does this person need to deliver in their first two years?

For example, it might be 8-12% savings across a $300m indirect spend base. Or consolidating a tail of 2,000 suppliers. Or moving the business from transactional purchasing to real category management. Whatever it is, that outcome becomes the yardstick every candidate is measured against.

Seems logical, right? Yet most Procurement hires are still made against a job description and a minimum number of years’ experience.

Category management depth

Having reviewed thousands of Supply Chain & Procurement resumes, I can tell you “delivered savings” is the most overused line in the market. So we dig deeper.

How did they actually run the category, from spend analysis and market research through to sourcing strategy, negotiation and implementation? And were the savings still there 12 months later, or only in the business case? By the end of the interview, you should be in no doubt as to whether someone has run the full cycle.

Supplier risk and resilience

As our Sydney Supply Chain Market Report tracked, supply disruption shaped much of the first half of 2026. Boards now want Procurement leaders who can map tier-two and tier-three supplier exposure, build dual-sourcing options and run proper Supplier Relationship Management (SRM).

We ask for real examples. Which supplier failed? What was already in place? How quickly was supply restored? This is when a candidate’s risk experience should really come to the fore.

Working capital and the CFO relationship

The strongest Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) work hand in glove with finance. We look for leaders who have negotiated payment terms responsibly, cut inventory through supplier-managed stock and tied procurement savings back to earnings (EBIT). In other words, someone who speaks finance as fluently as they negotiate.

A direct, confidential approach

I approach every candidate personally and discreetly, then interview them in depth against your success profile. You get a tight shortlist with written profiles, a side-by-side comparison against the brief and salary expectations benchmarked against our ANZ Supply Chain Salary Guide 2026.

Remember

The best Procurement hires are measured against outcomes, not years of experience. Define what success looks like before the search starts and every interview gets sharper.

Strategic procurement roles we secure

So who do we actually place? Here’s a snapshot. Salaries are average base plus super from our ANZ Supply Chain Salary Guide 2026.

01

Chief Procurement Officer (CPO)

The enterprise-wide owner of Procurement. Typically accountable for $500m to $5bn+ of addressable spend, the operating model, plus Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Modern Slavery compliance, usually reporting to the CFO or CEO. Average package: $280K ($220K-$360K), with short-term incentives usually on top.

02

Procurement Director & Head of Procurement

Leads teams of 10 to 60 across direct and indirect categories, with accountability for savings delivery, policy and contract compliance. Average: $215K ($180K-$240K).

03

Head of Strategic Sourcing

Runs complex, multi-year tenders in categories such as facilities management, ICT, fleet or raw materials. Get one of those contracts right and the value runs into the millions over its life.

04

Senior Category Managers

Own categories worth $50m to $300m. Be sure to look for a documented record of savings, demand management and supplier innovation, not just a list of tenders run. Average: $170K ($160K-$185K).

05

Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Leads

Turn key suppliers into a source of value rather than just cost, through scorecards, quarterly business reviews and joint improvement plans.

06

Contracts & Commercial Managers

Governance specialists who manage supply risk and compliance, and hold vendors to their KPIs.

07

Procurement Analysts

The engine room behind every category strategy. Spend analysis, savings tracking and supplier performance reporting, often in SAP Ariba, Coupa or Power BI.
